How to pick and announce a TikTok giveaway winner

Picking a TikTok giveaway winner fairly means drawing from the video's comments, counting each account once, and showing your audience how it happened. This guide covers the draw itself, the TikTok-specific traps (LIVE chat, repeat commenters, lookalike accounts), and how to announce the winner with a reply video.

Key takeaways

  • Pick a TikTok giveaway winner from the giveaway video's public comments, after the closing time, by drawing at random with a cryptographically secure random generator.
  • Turn on one entry per account before drawing, because on TikTok the most active commenters often leave dozens of comments and would otherwise have the best odds.
  • LIVE chat messages are not video comments, so a comment picker cannot read them, and a giveaway promoted in a LIVE should collect its entries as comments on a video.
  • Draw your backup winners in the same draw as the main winner, in order, so a replacement is already on the record if the winner does not reply.
  • Announce the winner with a reply video to their comment and warn followers that you only contact winners from your main account, because lookalike accounts often message entrants pretending they won.

This picker is for regular TikTok videos. A TikTok Shop giveaway should use TikTok Shop's LIVE Giveaway feature, as its policy requires.

How do you pick a winner on TikTok?

This applies to a regular, non-Shop giveaway. A TikTok Shop giveaway follows TikTok Shop's Giveaways and Promotions Policy, which requires its LIVE Giveaway feature.

  1. Wait until the closing time you announced.
  2. Copy the giveaway video's share link. The video must be public.
  3. Paste it into a TikTok comment picker and check the preview shows the right video.
  4. Turn on one entry per account, and the keyword rule if you asked entrants to include one.
  5. Exclude past winners or your own account if your rules say so.
  6. Set the number of winners to your winners plus your backups, and start a screen recording.
  7. Draw. The first name wins and the next names are your backups, in order.
  8. Open the winner's comment and check it follows your rules before you contact them.

Why turn on one entry per account?

On a popular TikTok video, a small number of people often comment over and over. Without a dedupe rule, each comment is a ticket, so the person who commented forty times has forty times the chance of someone who followed the rules and commented once. Most audiences read that as unfair, and most giveaway rules say one entry per person anyway.

With one entry per account turned on, each account enters once however many times it commented. If you also use a keyword rule, the comment kept for each person is one that contains the keyword, so nobody loses an entry they qualified for.

Can you pick a winner from TikTok LIVE chat?

Not with a comment picker. LIVE chat messages are separate from the comments on a video, and a comment picker reads video comments. If you announced the giveaway during a LIVE, ask viewers to enter by commenting on a giveaway video, then draw from that video.

If the giveaway is part of TikTok Shop, the Shop policy decides how it runs: it requires the LIVE Giveaway feature, and when that is not available it allows only join to win or comment to win during a LIVE.

How do you contact a TikTok giveaway winner?

Reply to the winner's comment first. A reply notifies them in their activity, it is public, and it does not depend on their messaging settings. Ask them to message you from the account that commented.

Direct messages are less reliable for a first contact, because whether a message reaches someone depends on their own messaging settings. Do not rely on a direct message alone, and never ask a winner for payment, card details or a password.

Set a reply window in your rules, such as 48 or 72 hours, and when it closes, move to the first backup from the same draw and say so publicly.

How do you announce a TikTok giveaway winner?

Reply to the winner's comment with a video. The video shows their comment on screen, tells your audience who won, and is the natural place to show the draw. Keep it short: the comment, the draw recording, the prize, and the scam warning.

Copy-paste reply-video caption
We have a winner! Congratulations @[winner handle], you won [prize].

Drawn at random from all eligible comments on [date]. The full draw is in this video.

We will only contact the winner from @[your handle]. If any other account messages you saying you won, it is not us.

What about fake winner accounts?

After a giveaway, lookalike accounts with a handle one character off yours often message entrants to say they won and ask for a fee, card details or a login. TikTok's Community Guidelines prohibit impersonation and deceptive behaviour, and you can report those accounts, but the most useful thing you can do is warn people in advance.

Say in your rules, in the announcement and in a pinned comment that you only contact winners from your main account and never ask for payment. Then report lookalike accounts as you find them.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do you pick a random winner from TikTok comments?

Paste the public video link into a TikTok comment picker after the giveaway closes, turn on one entry per account and any keyword rule from your giveaway, and draw. Free Comment Picker does this with no login, no app and no account, and draws with a cryptographically secure random generator in your browser.

Is there a free TikTok giveaway winner picker?

Yes. Free Comment Picker is free for one draw a day reading up to 500 comments, with no signup. A paid Pro plan adds unlimited draws and up to 5,000 comments per draw; the draw itself is the same on both.

How do I tell the winner on TikTok?

Reply to their comment, which notifies them and is public, then ask them to message you from the account that commented. Do not rely on a direct message alone, and announce publicly with a reply video once they have answered.

What if the TikTok winner doesn't reply?

Wait for the reply window in your rules, then contact the first backup from the same recorded draw and say publicly that the prize passed on. Drawing backups in the original draw means nobody can say the replacement was picked by hand.

Can I pick more than one TikTok winner?

Yes. Free Comment Picker draws up to five winners in one draw, in order, so the first names are your winners and the rest are backups.

Can I exclude people who won my last giveaway?

Yes. Turn on exclude previous winners and paste their handles before you draw, and they are removed from the pool.
