Free Secret Santa Generator

A free Secret Santa generator that draws names in your browser and gives each person a private link to their match. Nobody draws themselves, couples and housemates can be kept apart, and you can add a budget, a date and a note. No email addresses, no signup, and the draw is never uploaded.

One name per line. Commas are kept, so "Smith, John" stays in one piece.

One group per line, names joined with +. People in the same group never draw each other, in either direction.

How it works

How do I draw names for Secret Santa online?

  1. 01

    List everyone taking part

One name per line, three people or more. If two people share a first name, add an initial so each person is unique. Add exclusions for anyone who should not draw each other, such as partners or people who live together.

  2. 02

    Draw the names

The generator shuffles the list with your browser's cryptographic random generator and keeps the first arrangement that breaks none of your rules. Nobody gets themselves, and nobody gets someone they are excluded from.

  3. 03

    Send each person their link

Every participant gets their own link. It opens this page and shows only their match, plus the budget and date. Send the links by WhatsApp, text, Slack or email: the organiser never has to see who has whom.

Capabilities

What does this Secret Santa generator do?

No email addresses needed

Other tools email each person their match, which means collecting everyone's address first. Here each match travels in a private link you send however your group already talks.

Exclusions for couples and households

Put Ana + Ben on a line and they can never draw each other. Groups work too: list a whole household on one line and nobody in it buys for anyone else in it.

No swapped pairs, if you want

Turn it on and two people never end up buying for each other, so the exchange feels like one big circle rather than a set of private swaps.

The organiser can take part too

In link mode the organiser sees a list of names and links, never the matches. The links are scrambled, so nobody can read a match off them at a glance.

Budget, date and a note

Add a spending limit, the exchange date and a short note such as "wrap it and bring it on Friday". Everyone sees them on their reveal page.

Nothing is stored

There is no account and no database. The draw happens on your device and each match lives only inside its own link.

Background

What is a Secret Santa generator?

Plain explainer

A Secret Santa generator does the job of names in a hat for a gift exchange: it pairs every participant with one other person to buy a gift for, keeps the pairs secret, and makes sure nobody draws their own name. A good secret santa name generator also handles the awkward parts a hat cannot, like keeping partners from drawing each other or telling people their match when the group is spread across cities.

The hat has a well known failure: someone pulls their own name and the whole draw starts again, usually with the organiser now knowing several matches. An online secret santa picker removes that loop. It checks every rule before anyone sees a result, so the first draw is the final one, and nobody needs to be in the same room.

Most tools that draw names for Secret Santa ask for an email address per person and an account for the organiser. This one sends each match in a private link instead, which suits office exchanges in a chat channel, families on a group chat, and friends who would rather not hand their address to another website. A Secret Santa with exclusions, a budget and a date takes about a minute to set up.

  • Drawing a single winner from a list rather than pairing people up? The random name picker picks one or more names with the same cryptographic draw.
  • Splitting a group for games at the party? The random team generator deals the same list into even teams.

Sources

The shuffle uses the browser's cryptographic random generator, the same one used for security keys.

Trust & fairness

How does the draw stay fair and secret?

A gift exchange only works if nobody can steer the draw and nobody can peek. Here is exactly what happens when you press draw.

01 / draw

A cryptographic shuffle

Names are shuffled with crypto.getRandomValues, the browser's cryptographically secure random generator, and the first shuffle that breaks no rule is used. Before shuffling, the generator checks that your exclusions leave at least one valid draw, so an impossible setup is reported instead of retried forever.

02 / secret

The link is the envelope

Each match is stored in the part of the link after the # sign, which browsers never send to a web server. The text is scrambled so it cannot be read at a glance. It is not encryption: anyone who has a person's link can open it, so send each link only to its owner.

03 / nothing kept

No account, no database

Nothing about your group is saved anywhere, by this site or anyone else. If you lose the links, run a new draw and send the new ones; old links keep showing the old draw.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How does this Secret Santa generator work without email?

Each person's match is packed into their own link. When they open it, this page reads the match from the link and shows it to them. You send the links yourself through whatever your group uses, so nobody's email address is collected.

Can I stop couples from drawing each other?

Yes. Under exclusions, write one group per line with names joined by a plus sign, for example "Ana + Ben". People in the same group never draw each other in either direction. You can list three or more people on one line for a household.

What if the exclusions make a draw impossible?

The generator checks first and tells you. For example, if half the group are excluded from each other, there may be nobody left for one of them to buy for. Remove an exclusion or add people and draw again.

Does Secret Santa work with an odd number of people?

Yes. Secret Santa is not done in pairs: each person gives one gift and receives one, so three, seven or twenty-three people all work. The only limit is that you need at least three.

Can the organiser take part without knowing the matches?

Yes. Choose private links. You see each person's name next to a link, but not who they drew, and the links are scrambled so the match cannot be read off them at a glance. Just do not open anyone else's link.

Is a person's link private?

Only as private as you keep it. The link is the secret: anyone who has it can open it and see that person's match. Send each link to its owner only, in a direct message rather than the group chat.

What happens if I draw again?

You get a completely new draw with new links. Links you already sent keep showing the old draw, so if you redo it, send everyone their new link and tell them to ignore the old one.

Is anything saved or uploaded?

No. The draw runs on your device. There is no account and no database, and the part of the link that holds the match is never sent to a server. Close the tab before copying the links and they are gone.

Can we draw names together in the same room?

Yes. Choose "Show me the whole list" and the full set of matches appears on screen, which suits a family draw at the table or a classroom where the teacher hands out slips.

Is the Secret Santa picker really random?

Yes. It uses the Web Crypto random source, the same kind of generator used for security keys, and keeps the first shuffle that follows your rules. Nobody, including the organiser, can steer who gets whom.
